Heart of Ice Western Lovers Denim Diamonds #24 Diana Palmer 9780373885244 Books

Rating: 1.5 stars. PG-13, mild sexual descriptions.
Note: Stand alone read. Re-released as 24th in Western Lovers series.

SKIP IT. Adequately written, ok plot -- IF you like a "rich, older, hunk falls for young, innocent virgin" storyline, but there are good supporting characters. HOWEVER, basic writing with limited vocabulary, the sexist attitudes are dated, the dialogue is mean spirited and trite, the characters are one-dimensional; the heroine is emotionally immature and just annoying, and the hero is judgmental, sarcastic, verbally and (borderline) physically abusive, and the male double-standard is distasteful. All detract from the predictable plot.

THE STORY follows wealthy, rugged Wyoming rancher, Egan, romance writer, Katriane, who shares a New York apartment with Egan’s sister, Ada. Neither Egan nor “Kati” can stand each other; Egan has decided that Kati is promiscuous because she writes “sexy” novels and she hates his chauvinistic distain. Unfortunately, Ada has invited Egan to spend a couple of weeks with them in New York at Christmas and after just a few days, Egan and Kati’s relationship turns from angry words to sexy sizzle. He invites her back to his ranch, and the fireworks continue but it’s difficult to find the romance because the erratic hero is alternately, hateful, demeaning, sexually aggressive, persuasive and the heroine is annoyingly wishy-washy.

OVERALL, the new cover looks great, but it is the same old book. MY ADVICE, SKIP IT. If you like D. Palmer's recurring theme of rich, older, guy initiates young innocent, try one of her later books. Otherwise, there are a lot better books out there.

You may also enjoy the complex characters and storytelling of N. Bruhns, A. Stuart, or E. Palfrey. For sweet, funny, heart touching romances with great descriptive imagery try Susan Fox, Cara Colter, and Nikki Logan.

Heart of Ice Western Lovers Denim Diamonds #24 Diana Palmer 9780373885244 Books Reviews

A good book to read on any day
Proud rancher Egan Winthrop was certain that his sister's friend, Katriane, was just like the women in her romance novels. How else could she pen dozens of love scenes in such intimate detail?

Unfortunately, Egan was sorely mistaken. Most of what Katriane knew about relationships she'd discovered in books and Egan scared her witless! At least, that's what she thought. Why else did she tremble whenever the big man came near, her heart pounding with awareness? She couldn't be in love with Egan - or could she?
Kati's friend has invited her brother, Egan, a tough western rancher, to New York for Christmas. Kati and Egan have always been at odds, but Kati resolves to try and be nice for her friend's sake. See, Kati is a romance novelist, therefore Egan automatically assumes that she is promsicuous and gets inspiration for her novels from her life. The two cannot deny their attraction to each other, so Egan invites Kati to his ranch so she can do research for her new book. Sparks fly even more, Egan learns how wrong he was, and the happy ending is wrapped up in a nice, neat, *fast* little package.
This story is packed with strong emotions and clashing personalities. Too bad Egan is so offensive that there is no way I could possibly like him. The comments he makes to Kati, calling her a [prostitute] and insinuating horrible things, are indefensible. Kati barely sticks up herself. It is also completely irrational that Egan assumes what he does about Kati. So irrational, it borders on absurd.
This is my first Palmer, and, while I don't like the book, I plan on reading more of her stuff because she writes well and knows how to elicit emotion from her reader.
I've been reading romances for nearly 40 years, and Diana Palmer is one of my favorite romance writers. Yes, her stories can be similar and her characters as well. But she's always reliable, and I always feel the chemistry between her characters. When I want a quick sweet read, a Diana Palmer is my first choice.

For me, this is among her best, if not the best. For whatever reason it resonates with me, and I know I've reread it dozens of times in the past 24 years since it came out. Yes, Egan needed a good solid butt kick sometimes. Yes, Kati needed to polish her big-girl shoes and give it to him. But the "misunderstanding" aspect works for me, because they're both competent *single* people who are terrified of having their emotions mangled. Been there! It makes you slightly irrational. But both the scene at the breakfast table when she is about to leave... and then on the rug later... Whew! Mmm mmm mmm. And I love his answer when she says "You don't know how many books I've read this in."
Good story. I almost give it a full 5 stars. However, at one point it is annoying how immature and stubborn Egan can be.

Kate is a romance writer who is in love with this Egan character. Shes independent, strong, smart. She enjoys herself while still mainting her self-respect.

Egan on the other hand has a misconception of Kate just because she writes romance novels. He believes that Kate is easy because of the dialogue in her books. While it understandable that he thinks that way, at one point it begins to seem very annoying that he will not change his mind about her yet wants her to give in to him easily.

Basically, thats the story throughout the whole book. The only thing that makes up for it at the end, is when he confesses his love after many years. Some love, if he thinks about her that way.

A nice story, but only because of Kate. Egan saves his behind at the end, but nevertheless an annoying character.
Rating 1.5 stars. PG-13, mild sexual descriptions.
