Rhia has a special power which leads strange creatures to her. She discovers who she really is when the man from her dreams comes to rescue her. I have to say that she might not have needed any rescue. This book has a very strong female characters who seems a little bit too trusting to be believed in. There is no real deep reasoning on her action. She is impulsive and let herself be pushed around a little too much, which at length tended to be annoying. She knows stuff, I grant her that but she always seems to wait and change her mind later.
I enjoyed the world and the magic even if it wasn't pushed far enough. The healing parts were really great and the use of colors in the writing was really awesome. The villains were also nicely developed. I would have loved to see more on their point of view because their big plan didn't make much sense explained from the side of the nice guys.
I wasn't a big fan of the romantic relationship and the yummyness of the male character was a little bit too repetitively emphasis, yes he is awesome and protect her and he is gorgeous but I'm not sure that's sufficient to make a relationship. Bite me the taciturn, sulky type is not really my cup of tea so this might be a reader's flaw.
If I have one real complain it's more about the ending. The task was supposed to be difficult and I would have loved to see an entire book for the heroine to travel the country to fix it and find the missing mate. It didn't happen, instead she relied on body language and poor cold reading. I think it deserved a bit more.
I would recommend this book to all fan of fantasy romance. It will take you places. (less)

Call of the Dragon Return to Avalore Book 1 edition by Elianne Adams Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
Interesting story showing how one person's light can affect an entire community, or in this case world.
The story is pretty standard for this genre. A human is integral to the survival of another world, except they are not really human. Hero from the other world finds human, explains what is happening, escorts human back to the other world, and eventually, there is a happily ever after. The fun of the story is in the details of how this proceeds, what the various characters are, and what the worlds are like.
This story has different versions of the characters from the other world that we usually see. Dragons are just the beginning. The bad guys also come in multiple flavors, as they age, they change. The characteristics of the various species are interesting. There is also a difference in how things affect men vs. women.
The world itself is not as complex as it could be. There is enough information to understand the story, but it could use more depth. I didn't really like the role of the Elders, but that is one of the things I don't like. Their role made more sense after reading the prequel story, Flickering Light. Still, rigidness gets to me. That being said, the story had me invested in it enough to draw out my emotions. Always a good sign in a book.
Overall, I recommend this book if you like the Genre.
Thanks,
PJ
Fantasy is not my first genre of choice. It's something I read when I need a big break from other things that I'm doing or just life in general. I needed a break and I got a reward when I read this book.
Rhia is just a girl trying to make her way through life. She knows she's different and she has special healing powers and uses them to help people. She also knows that something dark is after her. She just doesn't know what. She lives in a humble, ratty apartment and keeps a low profile. Imagine her surprise when she discovers a man in her apartment and this man wants to take her to a place she's never heard of. In addition to that, he tells her that she is the Queen of Avalore. She is filled with doubt, but goes along with him. It wasn't as easy as that.
What she doesn't realize is this man is a dragon and Avalore is a real place. This dragon, Drake, doesn't do full shift changes as shifts happen in other books. He stays in human form for the most part with the powers of a dragon. Rhia also doesn't know she's got brothers, although she'd dreamed about these guys her whole life.
Getting Rhia back to Avalore is a feat unto itself that involves Drake and her brothers getting involved with nefarious creatures and bloody battles. She's still not sure she is who they think she is, but soon discovers the truth and goes against one of their esteemed traditions, taking great risk to do it.
I enjoyed this book. I was drawn into the story and wanted to find out what happened next. I cared about the characters and found myself cheering for them and sharing their heartbreaks. It's fast-paced and well written with just a few errors that did not take away from the reading experience at all.
Great book!
My main impression of this book it's incredibly dull.
Rhia has always felt different and isn't sure why. When she runs into Drake, he is able to tell her that she is the long-lost queen of his otherworldly homeland, Avalore.
The pacing is tedious. Most of the book involves Rhia and Drake being in danger, fleeing to a safe place, flirting or making love, getting back into danger, and repeating the cycle. The world-building is muddled. Avalore is vaguely drawn -- the women wore silk gowns, but they had canned soup, photography, and cursed like modern Americans. Did they import technology from our world? Did they invent these things on their own? Threads of the story are inconsistent -- at one point, Drake says he stayed up all night to research an exception to Avalorian customs. But when Rhia invokes the exception, everyone in the crowd instantly know what she's talking about. Why did Drake need to research it?
With more details about the world and some improved plotting, this could have been an entertaining read. As it is, it's just too difficult to get into.
