This book was mentioned on a podcast that I listen to called My Favorite Murder, so I thought I'd check it out. It was different, but that's to be expected from VC Andrews. For the most part I enjoyed the book. I can't say what exactly I didn't like without giving away spoilers. Just remember to stay out of the woods and SSADGM!

My Sweet Audrina The Audrina Series VC Andrews 9780671729462 Books Reviews

I got so impatient with the pacing of this book that I had to read spoilers on Wikipedia to satisfy my unappeased curiosity. First book I read by VCA was FITA, then the following sequel, and the pacing on both of those were unparalleled. They had me turning the pages like I was a dehydrated woman drinking water. MSA was really slow throughout the entire story. It picked up a little towards the end, and let's face it, that sex scene in the graveyard was glorious, but all in all, I really despised how weak Audrina was, and felt there was really no closure as to whether Sylvia was a big faker or not. I refuse to read Whitefern, as perusing the reviews has given a pretty good impression of a poorly-written novel by the ghostwriter. Anyway, I'm not really sure what all the fuss is about over this novel. It was a proper Gothic novel, as VCA must have intended it to be, but it just didn't have the magic that the FITA series had for me.
I cannot give enough props to VC Andrews and her AMAZING writing style. She definitely is one of my top 3 favorite authors; she makes you think as you read. This book is astounding, (I loved the Flowers in the Attic series) the way she writes always leaves you wanting more and needing to know what happens next, you just can't ever put it down! As the story moves along you start to suspect what might be going on with the little hints she gives here and there, but never enough for you to see what's clearly going to happen. I had seen the movie before reading this and I have to say that though the movie is good, this was SO much better! The visuals VC gives us as readers are impeccable; her wording is, as always, descriptive and flowing; perfection. Emotional rollercoaster this one, but, oh so good!!
Firstly I want to say that this is a very good book. The first section was hell to get through, but after that it sped up and blew me away! It churns my stomach to think things like V.C. Andrews writes are happening to people out in the world. This book angered me very much! I thought Audrina was smart, but when she stayed at the house at the ending, I was done. Vera is a hateful wench whom I did not feel sorry for at all. Like get over it, Daddy doesn't love you, does that give you the excuse to set up the rape of your younger sister? No I don't think so. Also the rape scene broke my heart so much! It was very hard to read, a little through and I'd have to set the book down for a minute. Arden is the worst guy I have every read in a novel! I had so much hate boiling toward him near the end. And it's not mainly because he did nothing to help Audrina, but because when she needed him most he was fooling around with stupid Vera! Only person I sympathize with is Damien and Ellie. Damien was only trying to do the right thing, and save his daughter from a life filled with depression. This book will bring about so many emotions so prepare yourself!
I really enjoyed the first book in the Casteel series about poor Heaven struggling to help raise her family. Yes, it is very twisted and strange and gets worse as the book goes on but I would read it again. The second book was okay as well. The third book was way too soap-opera-y. Too many earth-shattering things happening at once. But the fourth book is absolutely ridiculous. I started reading it again because I totally forgot what happens in the series. But to kill off the two main characters of the series just so the girl can live with her creepy grandpa? Ridiculous. I don't think I even care about what happens, I probably won't finish it. And the fact that VC Andrews ALWAYS has siblings or half-siblings fall in love each other is just creepy and gross (Did she love her brother or something?). I read the Hudson Series and of course the Dollanganger series. Probably won't be reading anymore of them now.
This review has spoilers, so I apologize. I have a feeling a great many of you are probably aware of this book already, though, as it’s been around for several decades, but be aware. I usually (almost always) try to write spoiler-free reviews, but I had to make an exception for this novel. I think you’ll see why.

I read this book because of the My Favorite Murder podcast (SSDGM), and what the actual heck did I read? This book is wild. I can see why this book was popular in the 80s but, now, in 2017, it’s altogether problematic.

First of all, the gang r*pe of a nine-year-old girl. Need I say more?

Then, the blatant lying to her by her parents in an effort to brainwash her of her memories, her mother scrubbing her raw in the bathtub after she was raped, her father’s continual abuse to basically every woman in his life, the sexual contact between a fourteen-year-old girl and grown man whom she runs away with, and the mistreatment of the mentally disabled sister. There’s pretty much nothing in this book that didn’t make me cringe.

The thing that gave me mixed feelings the most, though, was the scene in the graveyard at the end. Audrina, obviously, has serious issues with sex throughout the novel so, as someone with PTSD, that scene felt so extremely unreal and almost disrespectful. It felt as though Andrews had no idea what it is really like for someone who has lived a traumatic experience, and as though she was just writing straight from her butt. I understood the concept she was going for, but it really missed the mark for me.

This was a good mystery, for sure, and I can certainly understand why young teenagers in the 80s found this novel to be so enticing, but as a thirty-three-year-old woman in 2017, I was unimpressed.

Andrews could write, I’ll give her that, and she can craft a good story, but this was not for me. I definitely see why Karen and Georgia picked this to read on the podcast, and it’ll make for some good, hilarious discussion.
