Our First Year Sketches From An Alpine Village eBook Allen E Rizzi
La Val di Non. Trentino. Sud Tirol. Terms I have heard since infancy. At the end of the nineteenth century, a young man and a young woman immigrated to America from two villages in Val di Non of northern Italy. Ironically, they had not met while growing up in Austria (Italy after WWI) in villages only five miles apart. They were drawn to America and opportunity where they met and later, married. Twelve children, products of these two hard working, bard playing immigrants, grew up and prospered in "America".Eight trips to the Tiroleon region since 1996 have fulfilled my life long dream of meeting distant relations and walking the paths known to my grandparents during their youth. The social customs, the food, the exhilarating scenery, but most of all, the wonderfully warm hospitality of the people draw me back to the area over and over.
The author has described the area and the people so very accurately. He has explained the wonderful but complex mixtures of local languages, especially the unique dialect known as nones, of which the residents are so proud. And, the author is living my yet unattained dream of residing in the valley and the village of my grandfather's birth.

Our First Year Sketches From An Alpine Village eBook Allen E Rizzi Reviews
Excellent read. Really enjoyed it. Found the family history interesting too. Allen did a great job painting the pictures with words.
An interesting read. Enjoyed it. Keep up the great work.Great writing, a great bookand great read! Keep up the great work.
Grab a cup of tea, curl up in your favorite reading spot, and enjoy a vacation to the Tyrol without leaving your own home. This author knows how to paint such a vivid picture that one may start to long for a similar experience.
My father was also born in Cloz. I have been there several times in my life, and hope to go again. It is so valuable to see where your ancestors came from. Allen Rizzi's story of his return brings out the cultural differences and the joys of the homeland, as well as what to expect if you want to do this too.
I found this account of two fellow Americans finding their way in a new country to be very informative and entertaining. It just goes to show you that there are unique and entertaining old people everywhere but lots of really old ones in Italy. This was a really poignant account of a Renaisance man discovering his roots and family history.
"Our First Year" gives a very intimate and informative inside look at the experiences of the author, Allen Rizzi, and his wife Rachel's first year of residency in the tiny alpine village of Tret di Fondo in the South Tyrol region of northern Italy. The Americans embarked on this bold adventure to find a new life and a new way of living, and Rizzi journals the daily adventures of their assimilation in to the culture of the region, which is the ancestral home of his father and current home of many of his relatives. The feelings of pride and the importance of family are palpable on every page, as one reads about his journey to discover his roots and how they begin to put down roots of their own.
The text is full of rich story-telling and vivid imagery, transporting the reader onto the landscape themselves. I could feel my feet traversing the mountain paths, tasting the local cuisine (& vino!), gazing at the beautiful mountain vistas, observing all the wildlife in the area, appreciating the rich history and architecture, and conversing with all the interesting local citizenry! Rizzi breathes so much life onto the pages with the sights, sounds and smells of the area and keeps the reader entertained , sometimes humorously, with snippets of some of the "challenges" of being an Americam in Italy! Although his roots are there among the mountain passes, it still seems to say, in many ways, that he and his wife are "strangers in a strange land."
One central theme seems to flow throughout the book, which is the importance of family and that family is the core of existence in this village. This is evident in Rizzi's desire to to learn about those who have come before him and how this place and these people have shaped him into who he is today. Above all, I felt that this book was a "love story"... love of family, love of home, love of life. It was a very good read and one that whet my appetite to one day hopefully visit this area and create some experiences of my own!
I am halfway through this fascinating book about a small town/village in Italy where the author and his wife were the first Americans to ever visit this small and quaint Italian village. His true accounts of past and present of the small village of his ancestors grabbed me the instant I started reading the book. I felt like I was there and that I actually knew the author. His words are so real on the page that I feel like I am there with him. Italy is on my bucket list someday, and I hope to discover quaint little towns and villages like this one. Now to continue reading.
